It is a little confusing, there are golf clubs which are organisations that provide golf facilities, maintain golf courses, hold golf committee meetings, organise golf tournaments & so on. You can hardly give these golf clubs for Christmas. Although perhaps, you could give one years membership fees of a famous golf club..that would be a super christmas present.
No, the golf clubs we mean are the golf clubs,the equipment,that one plays golf with. Fortunately, there is a wide range of golf clubs that make admirable gifts for this Christmas. Top of the christmas list is the golf driver. This is the aristocrat of golf clubs. For the uninitiated, this is first club that is used to start each hole. Golfers 'drive' off with their driver! Actually, the correct verb is 'tees' & not the afternoon type! So, a golfer tees off with his driver.Not the driver of his golf buggy, by the way.All very confusing.
The next golf club to see action is the golf wedge. Shaped, as you would imagine, like a wedge. It cuts under the ball, propelling it in a steep 45 degree trajectory to land close to the pin. That is the flag that sits in the hole which is the ultimate target & hopeful destination for the golf ball. The golf putter then swings into action. Its aim is 'to put' the ball into the hole. All very simple, apart from when the ball is 15 feet from the hole on a green that seems to curve in every direction, and the wind blowing 30 knots and driving rain...such is a golfer's life & happiness. They would not change it for anything. So, keep them happy with golf presents this christmas. |
